Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback) her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, did not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry claimed that she was too shy to act in high school but began doing shows in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry made her debut with New York after graduation, getting small roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California to work as a theater actress. She appeared on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning film Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. Her father played her on The ABC show Scandal. The actress was also featured on the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mom. The actress was chosen for the role despite having a close family connection to the character.
